There was a question a while back about equalizers. I ran across a
couple to consider. The website:

http://www.elementalaudio.com/index.html

Eqium and Firium are the equalizers and then some. They cost, but not
too bad compared to some others. I've not tried them. But they look
nice. Both mac and windows versions.

What got me to look at the site was Inspector. For those with Peak 4,
it's in the VST plugins, it's a free download from the site above and is
available in both mac and windows versions in several plugin formats.
The one in Peak is not the current version.

The realtime spectrum display is interesting, though I prefer a realtime
sonograph. It displays each channel using red and blue, areas in common
then show purple. It's settable in the newest version for peak or
average, fast or slow decay. The one with Peak does not have this, just
one version.

It's also nice it has a RMS and a peak metering display, with caution
and warning levels settable.

But just below that is the one that caught my eye, since I record in
stereo. It's a balance meter. Complete with settable alarms and numeric
as well as visual readout. From this you can get how close to balance
your recording is, by careful observation you can evaluate your stereo
width too. Think about evaluating different stereo mic setups with this
sort of tool.

Below that is a set of clipping readouts, also with settable alarms.

Finally, a headroom readout, also with settable alarm.

You can save sets of settings to save having to redo it all.

I've been playing around with a display containing inspector and
SparkXL's realtime sonograph. That's a pretty complete look at a sound
that's playing. Peak can run this combo, though the sonograph really
makes it work hard. Occasionally it will bomb so maybe not as useful for
filtering (the entire FXMachine of SparkXL will run in Peak). But really
neat for just looking at a sound you are listening to.
