We recorded earthquake "swarms" near Mammoth, California several
years ago, Ted. Earthquakes of anywhere from 3 - 5.5 on the Richter
scale were occurring every minute or so for almost a month.
Typically, the sounds are down around 15 - 17Hz which, when speeded
up, are impressive.

Got that. Way to do it is to put a pair of contact mics on a piece of
wire mesh and let ou insect do the walking. Sounds cool. We've also
got some insects walking across leaves. Lay a hydrophone or a
lavaliere mic on the ground around an ant mound and let the critters
walk over the transducer.

NASA did that in the Antarctic. Called "whistlers, " we have a copy.

>Sound of ice freezing? CO2 (or other gases)
>concentration in the air near a tree, measured over months, converted to
>sound, sped up? Sound of a spider spinning a web?

Most of this stuff is covered in my new book/CD, WILD SOUNDSCAPES:
DISCOVERING THE VOICE OF THE NATURAL WORLD (Wilderness Press, 2002).
It can be got off of our web site under the Publications tab.

We're now working on the sound that the wave form of certain streams
and rivers create by drawing them out and playing them back as sound.
