You would need a different MD player for a start. Some decks, and the
pro portables like the HHb Portadisc have digital output, the consumer
MD portables don't. Typically you use a optical digital cable, though a
coax system does exist too. A deck is cheaper than buying a pro portable.

Once you had that, your computer would need a optical digital input.
Either a good soundcard, or one of the USB conversion units that had
digital in.

Then, you would play the recording with your MD, via the optical digital
connection input it into your computer where you would record the
digital audio stream. At realtime as usual.

You will get a somewhat more accurate representation of what's recorded
on the MD that way. All depends on the equipment forming each link,
though since it's sending digital audio code there is less to mess it
up. Compared to the average analog system it will be better.

As Aaron has noted, there is only this one setup that's obsolete
hardware and old software that can do it faster. At lower quality
according to his report.

It amounts to just the same sort of process as you would use with
cassette, DAT, reel-reel, etc. MD, like all those is a audio recorder,
not a computer accessory. The digital it puts out is designed around the
digital links of component stereo systems.

BTW, NetMD has a USB link, but it's a copy protection system for music,
not a general purpose unit. I don't know the current state of the
hacking to get around the copy protection.
