Robin,

The inexpensive binaural setup I'm suggesting has several caveats:
First, in order to achieve binaural imaging, the diameter of the tree
needs to be about the same as the linear distance between human
ears...somewhere between 5 - 6 inches (12.5cm - 15cm). Second, the
mics, if Sony ECM55Bs, need to be quiet enough (or the signal loud
enough) so that you don't hear the pre-amp noise during soft moments
with little creature or geophonic density. Otherwise, the imaging
illusion on playback will tend to be messed up. To the extent that
those two conditions are taken into account, the result will fool
even the most demanding pros who swear by the more elaborate and
expensive technologies.
