Maybe CDs (and by implication DVDs)
are not such a great long-term
storage medium after all.
A study by a Dutch PC Magazine
found that some CDs became at
least partly unreadable after
only 20 months of proper storage.
Reportedly the worst offenders
were no-label CDs sold through
chain stores at cheap prices.
Here's a summary in English:

Perhaps a Dutch-speaking reader of
this group could review the original
article and give us a report.

Note that minidisc uses a different method
to save data, so this report *does not*
imply that data on minidiscs is at risk.
Speaking of minidiscs, I read a report
that Sharp showed a prototype consumer
minidisc model at a trade show in Germany
that has optical digital output as well
as input. So consumer minidisc users won't
have to purchase a separate minidisc deck
to transfer recordings to a PC in digital
form.
