Congratulations to Bill Rankin, Vicky Powys, Syd Curtis and David Rentz on=
excellent articles on Orthopteran (grasshopper/cicada/katydid, etc.)
recordings in the latest "Audio Wings" newsletter. Audio Wings is the
newsletter of the Australian Wildlife Sound Recording Group. The newsletter=
also has great articles on building your own windscreen (Rich Peet, Vicky,=
Jenny Beasley).
For more info on joining the group, contact Fred Van Gessel
- it's well worth it!
The insect recording info was timely for me, as I'm trying to help a
primatologist determine the reasons for the extended hearing ranges
(30,000Hz+) of the Owl Monkey and Squirrel Monkeys. It seems that these
insectivorous monkeys may need the extended range to find their orthopteran=
prey.
If you have recordings of either monkey species and can get to them easily,=
we need some to check their vocal range.
