Thanks I guess, Aaron, but obviously . . . gross!

Last year, while driving in Massachusetts, listening to very faint birds
through headphones from a recent Panama dawn recording, I was pulled over
by a policeman and given a written warning. In all states, he said, it is=

illegal to wear headphones while driving. I accepted the warning, and then=

asked if I could ask him two questions. He nodded.

What is the purpose of the law?
Because you cannot hear emergency vehicles with headphones on.

fair enough, I said, but what about 100 watts or more in car stereo speaker=

system?
He just laughed. Yeah, he agreed.

My take is: headphones, the lightweight birding ones I use, obscure NOTHING=

while I am driving. But they also sell no products.

A 100 watt stereo system sells a lot of macho hardware per car, even if the=

car ahead of you has to listen to your music at every traffic light. Perio=
d.

best,
