There are many options for portable CD
playback, but not for field recording.
The Marantz CDR300 is a portable CD recorder.
But this unit's 7lb/3.2kg weight, lack of
battery power, and requirement for placement
on a horizontal surface while recording argue
against its use as a field recorder. See
http://www.marantzpro.com/Products/CDR300.html
So I think you'd be best advised to use a
minidisc machine for field recording. No
portable minidisc machine has speakers loud
enoughto be much use for field playback.
Most have no speaker at all, headphones only.=20
So you'll need a set of battery-powered
external speakers.
A good place to start researching minidisc
recorders is http://www.minidisc.org/
Their equipment browser section has
specifications for a great many minidisc
recorders, past and present. When reviewing
the specs, pay attention to whether a
recorder has a microphone-in jack. Many
inexpensive recorders have line-in only.
Incidentally, the issue of field playback
is controversial. Many recordists "just say
no" to using playback in the field under any
circumstances. There are sensible restrictions
against playback in many parks and reserves.
