I'll be interested in what you find out. My G4 is a single 500, so will probably have a lot of the same issues once I start into that. Though disk speed definitely won't be a issue. I've got over 200 gigs of Ultra 160 disks in it and am adding another 140 gigs for the transition. We've tested all my main software on the newer G4 and it works there with only minor issues. I'd hate to think I'll have to buy a new machine. I'm planning on waiting a few more years if possible.
