Getting digital audio into a PC

I am purchasing an MD home deck with digital out to transfer digital
bird song recordings to my PC for editing, but don't want to buy an
audio CD-R deck because of space issues. Do you have recommendations
for how to do this cheaply? I guess the options are

1) a new sound card with digital I/O (I have some Yamaha card that
came standard in a Dell, so I assume I don't have that, though I
haven't checked ;) ) Any recommendations?

2) or a new sound card plus separate digital I/O interface
(SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 card ($49.95) and Opticompo POFP ($69.95) or
Opticompo POAB ($?))

3) some digital converter that let's me pump digital audio into the
USB (i.e. Edirol's UA-1D USB DIGITAL Audio interface, $99.95)

I am getting these ideas from http://www.minidisco.com/computer-
audio.html. Are there any solutions for less than $100?

Thanks,

Gernot Huber
