I am a new member to this group and a beginning nature recordist. I
have been recording a variety of sounds using consumer minidisc
equipment for several years now in my home town of Ann Arbor, MI. My
favorite sound so far is a recording of an ice storm made with a guitar
pickup mike inside an Altoids tin using a Sony R55; thirty minutes or
so of lovely tinking sounds. I was smitten by the recent "Going Wild"
article in Electronic Musician, am reading B. Krause's Wild Soundscapes
and have decided I would like to make higher quality recordings using
professional microphones. I now use a Sony MZ-N707 with a Sony
ECM-MS907. Simply put, what I'd like to know is which of the following
options is going to give me the biggest bang for the buck? Oh yeah, I
haven't decided on a microphone yet but that is another series of
questions altogether! Here are the options I am considering.
1. Buy a converter so I can plug XLR microphones directly into my Sony
N707 (what would this sound like?)
2. Buy a preamp such as the MP2 and connect it to my Sony MZN707 (what
would this sound like)
3.Buy a Marantz PMD650 (good preamp but lousy display?)
4. Buy an HHB MDP500 (not so good preamp but good all around?)
5. Buy a Denon DF-F20R( limited recording time with Flash cards, fewer
options than above and does it have phantom power?)
6. Buy a Marantz PMD690 (haven't read anything about these)
7. Buy a Nagra and go directly to heaven (just can't afford it!)
One last question: how does MP1 compression compare with ATRAC 4.5?
Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy question. I would
very much appreciate any comments you have.
