Zaxcom will show new hard-disc audio recorders
at the NAB show in early April. They compete with
the HHB Portadrive for on-location multi-channel
audio recording. The new machines are expected to
ship this summer.

More relevant to nature recordists, Deva has informally
announced that a smaller, less expensive 2 channel
version of these new machines with fewer mixer features
will be developed, with delivery in 8 or 9 months.

For details, see
http://www.zaxcom.com/hotnews/deva_news.shtml

In brief:

Deva 3: up to 24/96 recording, six input channels, $8,350
Deva 4: 24/96, 8 channels, $9,950
Deva 5: 24/192, 8 channels, $12,950

80GB internal hard disc
optional internal DVD-R
can record to hard disc and DVD simultaneously

new .ZAX audio format =3D loss-less data compression
reduces space required by 2/3

Since one hour of 24/96 recording takes about 1GB,
the .ZAX format would record 3 hours per GB per
channel. In other words, an 80GB disc could
record 40 hours of compressed six-channel audio.

internal mixer with 8 to 16 channels, M/S matrix support

color touch screen as well as conventional switches
NP1 format battery power
operating temp range 0F to 120F

fault-tolerant custom software includes ability to recover
erased files and directories, and to re-build directory
after power failure
