It's more portable than something on a card, and does not use a card
slot. It will work with a notebook with USB, for instance. Many models
have a much larger assortment of I/O options than soundcards generally
have. They will also have a headphone connection with it's own volume
control that's separate from the regular output port.
On the down side it's one more thing to clutter your desktop.
I don't know about the current ones, but the older Roland UA-30 is excellent.
On the PC side you do need to examine just how well your computer
handles USB audio devices. Some PC's are really poor at USB handling.
This is not a problem on the mac side if it's a mac that came with USB
built in.
