You might try (1) the combination of the Denecke AD20 and a Sharp or Sony Minidisc recorder connected by digital audio cable. You could monitor levels on the minidisc display and control levels via the AD20; or (2) using a SoundDevices MP2 pre-amp and the analog-in port of the Archos recorder. The MP2 has LEDs that show audio levels.
