I use a standard Garmin 3, but with the vehicle mounted external aerial.
This operates very effectively under dense forest canopy (lowland Rift
Valley of Africa), and - I have no idea why - will even operate under a
tiled roof (I.e. in my garage). Under solid concrete, etc it loses its
signal, but I have never had a problem in forest - except when I am in a
very steep sided valley. Have you tried the external aerial?

Anyone know of a GPS instrument that can be used successfully in dense
rainforest (closed canopy), 60 or 70 metres high? I'd sure like to buy one,
if it exists.
