Even worse is researchers who don't try because they don't have that
much money. Around here we could use dozens of folks out surveying frogs
to complete surveying Georgia. I have a hard enough time talking them
into even a cheap minidisc recorder and mic, let alone DAT. Non-game
wildlife has very low funding levels nearly everywhere.
I've talked with folks on some research projects where they need to
equip dozens of survey folks. That really adds up. And what's more, they
need something that's reliable in the hands of folks who don't know much
about caring for a machine in the field.
