The definitive answer is that a cloud can deliver either a positive or a negative charge to earth. Lightning can go any direction but NASA has a good primer before we get caught up in definitions. http://thunder.msfc.nasa.gov/primer/index.html My best recording of thunder still is cliped but was made with a low sensitivity microphone that could handle a high volume and is in stereo.
