They sound like the ones I've had dealings with. I don't exactly blame
them, it's really that their attention is elsewhere. As I say, that's
why I recommend the newer intelligent chargers. They tolerate set and
forget more than the old ones did. Even with those I don't completely
trust just leaving batteries in a plugged in charger. I charge mine and
remove them from the charger. Then, if they don't get used I'll redo the
NiCads every few weeks and the NIMH every month or two.

Note if your folks are using NiCad pacs you might want to rebuild the
pacs with NIMH. Not only are there D cells up to something like 8000mah,
but NIMH is more resistant to reverse voltage damage.

You have quite a bit higher prices there. The price for the chargers I
use with 4 NIMH 1800mah AA's included is about $37 here. It would cost
another $11 for a European 220v 50Hz AC adapter. The ones I use specify
that they use the DeltaV charge detection. That seems to be what a lot
of the newer chargers do. The latest is Flex Negative Pulse Charging,
which charges with pulses of charging current intermixed with short
discharge pulses. This, as I noted removes the problem of gas formation
during charge. I've not tried one of those yet, the place I buy from
normally stocks the Maha MH-C210, which is one of those as well as being
a fairly universal charger that could charge pacs. They run about $35
for the charger alone.
