Hello All:

I want to echo what Doug and now Su Anderson (and welcome to you, too!)
have said about this great addition to our bird sounds web resources. I
also extend my congratulations to Fernando and to his supporting
institution in Xalapa (aka Jalapa), Veracruz, el Instituto de Ecologia, A. C.

I must also say that he and el Instituto de Ecologia have been great
supporters for me in the completion of my upcoming software release, over
the last year. This product will involve field IDing capabilities for
over 2000 species of New World temperate and tropical birds, and Fernando
has helped me with numerous aspects of my work finishing this eight year
project. His talents have so far included habitat and range information on
Mexican species, sound recordings and hours of work to help with Spanish
technical terms, habitat types and software term translations. I have
found him to be a man of great patience, a technical perfectionist and one
of great vision, not only in ornithology but conservation issues as well.

One of the by-products of this collaboration I expect to make available
soon, is an XLS spread sheet of English-Spanish terms I have compiled with
much of his help by email, for bird field marks (Senos de Campa), and
descriptors. For example, how would you write in Spanish: long yellow
bill, white eye, or blue eyering & wattle?

(Ans: pico largo amarillo, iris blanco, o anillo y zarzo azul). Although I
began using web translation sources, books and diccionarios, Fernando,
being trained in Ornithology in Spanish and English, and as a professional
nature sound recorder, has made a huge difference to my effort. Thank you
so much, amigo!

As one can see from his main web photo, the spectacular Oreophasis
derbianus at nest, he is also widely considered a leading expert in the
Caracidae, especially those of western Mexico and Guatemala. He has also
just published the book:
Cracid Ecology and Conservation in the new millenium, co-authored with
Daniel M. Brooks, Ph.D., Cracid Specialist Group Chair, Dept. of
Vertebrate Zoology, Houston Museum of Natural Science .

We all look forward to hearing more of your field experiences!

Saludos.
