Today I visited the aquarium in Otaru,Hokkaido,Japan. They had a
female walrus in a large glass walled cage. The walrus kept repeating
the same call(audible through the glass),the first part a high
pitched varying screech, the second a periodic lower pitched tone and
finally a very low frequency single drone(this could be felt directly
through the glass). The last part reminded me of running a 20hz sine
tone through my speakers(not that they can reproduce it
accurately!!).Does anyone know how low a walrus call goes?I thought
this might tie in with the infrasound discussion. How about
alternative calls?I know nothing of sea mammal calls so any
information would be of great interest.A lurker,Richard,Sapporo,Japan.
