FWIW the Sony R909 portable MD recorder weights 4.8 oz with battery :)

An 80 minute minidisc holds ~170 MB but costs < $2. Well, $2.79 if you get
the reeealy nice ones.  You know, with gold-plated connectors and all.

I averaged about 2 disks (recording) per AA when using a recent MD
recorder, this was without using it in conjunction with the NiMH
rechargeable (often nowhere to plug in!).

About half the datarate of full quality MD, I would think roughly equal to
MDLP2 mode MD (in which case a single disk holds 160 minutes...).
