Hi there mammal spotters,

I've been lurking on this list for too long. It is time to contribute, I
think. My main interest is birding and I often contribute to
Birding-Aus, but I enjoy seeing all kinds of creatures while out
birding. I include sightings of mammals in the database where I keep all
of my records. Unfortunately my list of mammals is quite poor (under 50)
but that merely reflects that I have only been recording mammals for a
short time.

In January 2006 my daughter and I went on a trek from Lukla to Tengboche
in the Everest region of Nepal. I was delighted to add the Himalayan
Thar to my list of mammals. We had very good views and I obtained a
reasonable photo of a group.

One afternoon while relaxing in our lodge in the village of Phakding I
saw a small mammal that I was unable to immediately identify. Our guide
said that it was probably a mongoose. At the time I was not aware that
the Indian Grey Mongoose occurred in the Himalayan region. From
descriptions and photos on the web it seems entirely possible that this
is the creature we saw.
