As I sat at my study desk today, I was conscious of a knocking sound nearby. I thought it was the wind blowing a branch against the window, but there was no wind at that time.
A little later, as I was passing a nearby picture window, I saw a Silvereye flying into the window repeatedly. There was no food in the form of spiders or similar. The bird was flying into clear glass. The attached video shows the behaviour
(if you can see it!!).
I went outside to get a “bird’s eye view” and the window at that time of day gave a clear reflection of the tree the bird was in. It was apparently attempting to try out the other tree, despite repeatedly braining itself. The behaviour
went on for some hours.
A companion joined the bird for a while but did not participate in on the behaviour. My guess is that the first bird may be juvenile. It does not seem as distinctly marked. The most evident distinction is that the first bird has black
smudging around and behind the eye. I also notice that the first bird vibrates its wings a little while it sits on the branch from which it attacks the window.
