Eastern Whipbird at ANBG

I was at the ANBG this morning leading a ‘Wake up with the Birds’ walk and was convinced I heard an Eastern Whip Bird coming from over the eastern fence behind and below the Banksia Garden. One of the group had a Merlin app which had resulted in Id-ing a Whip Bird amongst others. Unfortunately I couldn’t leave the group to run off looking for a rarity. I likened it to the pectoralis AM call on the Michael Morecombe app of the call of the Golden Whistler.

G’day folks,

I’m not sure if it’s the same one (quite likely), but just last week I came to a skidding, jaw dropping halt in the CSIRO bush block upon hearing a familiar whip-crack. Managed to catch a glimpse of it flitting through the undergrowth on the CSIRO side. Such a cool addition to the soundscape.

Have a good one,
Jack

A male calling and seen well at the end of the Sydney Gully. In my 21st year of leading beginners walks at ANBG and still surprised by something new here. Apparently there’s a record from 2023.
