Kama Access Update

Thanks Tracy. I also assume walking from the Pinnacle will not be possible as they extend the cattle crossing across William Hovell Drive.

Walking in from Whitlam is not possible so the only options are to get a key from Molonglo River entrance and drive in or seek permission from the local farmers to cross their land.

Figure 9 of the "William Hovell Drive Duplication Offset Site, Offset Management Plan  2026" perhaps suggests there could be access from the section of Whitlam north-west of Deep Creek, via the extension of Hazel Hawke Avenue, but that area is a construction site at present with no access permitted.

I have not read the whole document but it seems more interested in the Offset site adjacent to The Pinnacle than in access to Kama.

I tried searching the Parks ACT site but can't find Kama mentioned at all - maybe my fault, maybe not.

Here is the response that was passed on to me from Jo Clay's office regarding access to Kama.  Eventually access will be either by walking or bicycle only.   Presumably the Molonglo River reserve entrance, which would take me two hours or more to walk, will also be closed in due course to provide for the Ginninderry power line realignment.

Thank you for your correspondence on behalf of Tracy.

 

Works are underway to duplicate 4.5 kilometres of William Hovell Drive between Drake-Brockman Drive and John Gorton Drive. The project will improve safety, reduce congestion, and support growth in Canberra's north-western suburbs.

 

Construction commenced in May 2026. As part of site establishment, traffic barriers were installed along the corridor to define the construction zone and facilitate works.

 

The installation of these barriers has required the closure of the Kama Nature Reserve car park. The car park will remain permanently closed following completion of the project, as the site will be repurposed for a new active travel path that will pass through the former parking area.

 

The permanent closure of the car park formed part of the Development Application for the project, which was approved in October 2024. The closure has also been updated on Google Maps.

Future access arrangements for Kama Nature Reserve are the responsibility of the City and Environment Directorate and the Parks and Conservation Service.
