Winter Woodland Survey, Naas Site

Hi all,

I did the winter woodland survey on this rural leasehold south of Tharwa on 8 June. The morning was chilly (-3°C), but not frosty, and remained clear and sunny. The site was fairly green, with water in the dams and on the ground following recent rain. In total 30 species were recorded: 20 species observed at the six subsites and a further 10 species between subsites.

Surprisingly, only three species were recorded at the first subsite, which is usually the most active. Medium-large woodland birds were the predominant species recorded at the subsites, including plenty of Australian Magpies. Parrots included Crimson and Eastern Rosellas (a flock of about 10 were being aggressively harassed by Noisy Miners near subsite 2) and Red-rumped Parrots. A small number of Galah and Little Corellas were present, and Australian and Little Ravens, an Eastern Yellow Robin and a Common Bronzewing were heard. Apart from the Noisy Miners, the only honeyeater was a White-eared Honeyeater calling. Few smaller birds were seen or heard at or between the sub-sites other than a Superb Fairywren, Spotted and Striated Pardalotes, Weebills and two Yellow-rumped Thornbills. Grey Teal and Australian Wood Ducks were on or at the dams. Only one Willie Wagtail was observed, usually a common presence at this location.

I was very pleased to see a Jacky Winter on the fence bordering the drive as I started to leave, in the same spot where one was observed on the previous survey.

The number of species recorded at the subsites (20) was the same as last year, and similar to 2024 (21).
