Call for assistance

Whenever visiting the Jerrabomberra Wetland NR over the last 4 years, I paid special attention to the Grey Fantail and counted the number of birds along a fixed 5.5 km route. I wanted to find out the seasonal distribution and possible changes in numbers over time.

These counts revealed some unexpected aspects of the species’ move through our area, including the possibility that between late Match to mid-April (RIGHT NOW) we may get an influx of the Tasmanian race of the species.

But in order to verify this, we require photos of Grey Fantails (which are going to be vetted by Dr Richard Schodde to confirm the fantail race involved).

Ben Milbourne, part of the project, (together with A.O. Nicholls), has been our photographer, but he is currently interstate, and, due to circumstances, will be held up for some time before he can return.

Hence my call to birders with cameras or bird photographers to please take photos of ANY Grey Fantail in Canberra (the ACT) between now until mid-April.

You could send them to me via email (plus date and location) or, if you include them in an ebird list, just send me the number of your list and I can copy the images from there. You can take photos of as many fantails as possible (or you are prepared to take).

According to Dr Schodde the plumages to photograph are back tone, shoulder pattern and throat pattern.

Of course, all photographers are going to be acknowledged in the write up for Canberra Bird Notes.

Many thanks in advance.

Please send the photos to:
