The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is currently seeking public submissions on a proposed regulation that would allow the continued sale of "Second Generation" Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs). Yet SGARs are killing Australia’s wildlife at unacceptable levels.

Scientists have released findings of a study into the cause of death of 16 Masked Owls from metropolitan Perth and south-west of Perth confirming what conservationists have warned for years. All 16 owls had been exposed to long-lasting SGAR poisons – the “one-dose kills” products sold in common household brands. SGARs are highly persistent, highly toxic and cause ongoing preventable harm to wildlife. Safer alternatives exist.

Rats and other rodents that have consumed SGARs baits will transmit the SGARs’ toxins to owls and other native predator and scavenger wildlife. These toxins accumulate in the liver, weakening owls and making them vulnerable to vehicle strike, starvation and infection.

Access to and use of SGARs should only be available to licensed pest control operators under strict conditions. The APVMA must adopt stronger evidence-based reforms that genuinely protect wildlife.

Join BirdLIfe Australia in calling for all SGARs to be removed from public sale. Written submissions to the APVMA close on March 16. So please tell the regulator to act now to remove SGARs from supermarket shelves and ensure that only licensed pest control operators can access these highly toxic and long-lasting products.
