Planned burns

The burning on Block 12 initially foreshadowed for Friday 12th did not occur. However, this (undated) notice recently posted on the Bluetts gate suggests that burning might occur “within the next  two weeks”, so bear this in mind when next visiting the Block.

New fire trails

The new fire trails on Block 403 (the main part of the Bluetts Block nature reserve) are almost completed. Most of these are on fairly gentle slopes, and head of the PCS team undertaking the work has advised that they don’t anticipate laying down gravel, so they’re more pleasant to walk on than the older fire trails. The new trails are expected to be finished in a week or so, and worth checking out, particularly if you’re entering from the Denman side. Removal of some of the old internal fences on the Block is also planned for the near future.

Gula habitat surveys on Bluetts

Koalas (“Gula” in the Ngunnawal language) were once abundant around Canberra, but since the 19th century almost all have been lost to land clearing for farming and urbanization. The Conservation Council, in collaboration with the ANU, is researching the potential viability of Gula habitats around Canberra by undertaking transect surveys in a number of local areas. The surveys are being undertaken by volunteers under the guidance of Gula expert Keith Joliffe.

Keith will be leading a transect survey at Bluetts Block on Wednesday 7 January, starting at 10am, and invites anyone interested in this work to join him there. If you think you might like to participate, contact him at or 0427 546 156. There’s more information about these surveys on the CCACT website here.
