Today, the office of the ACT Conservator of Flora and Fauna Office has confirmed to key groups, notably Friends of Bluetts and Canberra Birds, that a fuel reduction burn is planned for Bluetts Block when conditions are appropriate. This burn has been in consideration and discussion for some time, though in recent weeks it had appeared that a burn might not occur until autumn. The ACT Fire Management Team team has said today that weather forecasts and predicted conditions mean that they may undertake a burn later this week. Their aim is "to burn adequately to reduce the fuel hazard while being controllable and within ecological guidelines. A final decision on whether to proceed will be made on the morning of any burn, based on the advice from a Fire Behaviour Analyst with the most up to date weather information available. If the burn does not occur on Friday, it will occur the next time conditions allow, which is likely to be autumn. Like always, this isn’t a commitment to a certain date or season, as it will always be dictated by the conditions on the ground on the day." They have also confimed "should the burn go ahead, an environmental values officer will be in attendance on the day to assist in ensuring the burn is undertaken to minimise impact to the ecological values of the site."
