Thanks David, I am familiar with that type of call over the past year which I best describe as scratchy or perhaps a cackle.  I have been hearing it quite a bit around my back fence where a female was often confronted by a couple of RWBs which had a nest near there, from which a couple of chicks fledged earlier this week.  Particularly over the past couple of years of close koel watching it has become very clear that Koels have a much bigger range of calls than the standard ko-el or whoas by the male and the kek kek keks of the female which the literature indicates.  It would be great if someone was able to study them properly.  Jack Holland

A female Koel was flying around near my house this morning and was seriously confronted by a RWB.  What caught my eye, or actually ear, was its repeated call - not just when it was in conflict with the RWB.  It was not the common kek kek kek, but something more like short squawks which went on and on.

I am not familiar with this sound or when a female makes that sound rather then the usual one.

Any enlightenment?
