We (myself, Alison Russell-French and Kathy Eyles) did the bird blitz at the Sanctuary this morning in mixed weather conditions. Fog and cold early at the first couple of sites, then the breeze got up when the clouds cleared later. We
did not survey all our regular sites and not the large dam, but we did get a few waterbirds on the smaller dams to add to the total.
The highlights were 2 Jacky Winters at one of our sites on the old coach road at the northern end of the Throsby neck, and 3 White-necked Herons on a mid-sized dam with fringing vegetation on the eastern side of the reserve.
There were a lot of Sacred Kingfishers (recorded at most of our sites), a few Leaden Flycatchers, White-winged Trillers at a couple of sites, a number of Superb Parrots flying across, all five local thornbills including Yellow Thornbill,
Mistletoebird, Speckled Warbler, Pallid and Shining Bronze-cuckoos. Some absentees this year, such as no robins and no birds of prey.
Our total of 58 species was reasonable, given the less than usual area covered, and the conditions.
All in, a very enjoyable morning out there.
Cheers
Jenny
