From an Australian viewpoint, the day to be commemorated is 15 September.  At sunset 50 years ago the familiar flag came down at Port Moresby and other centres and dozens of outstations across the territory.  The PNG one went up the next morning.  Not much difference for the birds at the time though.  However, since then many more people are out looking for them, in fewer trees in both countries, although the koel is a Canberra success story.  Different kinds of trees involved.
