Hi Alison,

This is the toughest time of the year for birds to find their food.  They have to diversify because of the lack of choice with their usual diet.

Out of necessity birds are opportunistic and grubs and insects tie them over until there is the new Spring growth, and later seeds.

You may also have seen the masses of cockatoos, corellas and galahs digging up grass roots on lawns, median strips etc.  Not their usual food but they do it every year.

I have seen Gang Gangs eating sawfly larvae but it never occurred to me that other parrots may also eat meat until I just saw two Eastern Rosellas eating meat that I had left on my deck railing for the local Butcherbirds.
