Thanks David. The detail in old prints can have some interest. It’ll be widely known that you can look at Gould’s complete BoA in the various online offerings. In the attached I
copied a small section of this lithograph and corresponding bits from the Biodiversity Heritage volume and the vol used by the Aust Museum. The similarity despite individual colorising of the lithograph is quite remarkable. But what I wanted to mention is
the inclusion of the scale insect. Gould often included the odd invertebrate in his bird pictures. This picture was evidently produced (drawn and lithographed) by Gould and Richter back in London. Either Gould brought back the scale insect on a twig, perhaps
along with other examples of veg & insects etc., or perhaps more likely Gould copied from a different collection of Australian items held in the UK, or the drawing of the scale insect was made in Australia (perhaps by Elizabeth Gould) and copied from that.
