Prue and I did our winter woodland survey in the southern half of Goorooyarroo NR this morning. Conditions were cold but sunny with little to no wind. It was damp underfoot with a few puddles in creek lines but dam levels were still low.
Plenty of snow was visible on the distant Brindabellas. 30 species were recorded across the reserve (compared to 31 on the equivalent survey last year), with 29 of these found during our point counts.
Interesting records included single Wedge-tailed Eagles at sites 3 and 5, a flock of 20
Red-rumped Parrots flying low through site 8, a dozen Red-browed Finches with a mixed flock at site 1, and
White-throated Treecreepers at sites 2 and 7, the latter are uncommon in our surveys. Several mixed flocks were encountered, mostly consisting of four species of
thornbills, Grey Shrike-thrushes, Golden Whistlers, Superb Fairy-wrens,
Weebills and Spotted and Striated Pardalotes, with a smattering of other species such as
White-eared and White-plumed Honeyeaters. An interesting incidental observation was of a
Darter circling high overhead.
