What mostaglia-induction Shorty !. In the late 1950s GCG arrived in UK, and the then Manchester Guardian which my parents read in Birmingham, reported this and named a local midlands lake as 'colonised'. As a near juvenile delinquent, with 2 equally ill-behaved
mates we headed on bicycles to the lake, carrying assorted wartime binoculars, some German.
And it was true: our first sighting was of the pair, behaving exactly as you so well captured. Some weed waving associated with what seemed like an eternal performance. They nested but the eggs was robbed, likely by egg hunters (late 50s, then still a
hobby}. I could romanticise, but we saw that birds behaved (and some 'birds and bees' evoked ?). All three of us became life-long birders, one was an excellent professional bird artist. All from an afternoon in a midlands park.
And what became of the 'Manchester' Guardian. 1
