And I heard one close to Swamp Trail at Cuumbeun NR on Captains Flat Rd yesterday. My first “local” one for many years.

Hi Isobel
Truly an impressive site for you all. They are very large and very noisy when calling!  I have been keeping my ears and eyes open over the last few weeks, hoping to encounter one locally - but no luck so far.
Wearing my eBird reviewer hat, I can say that over the last several years, Channel-bills are being reported more and more often to eBird. The number of keen eBirders has remained broadly the same over that time, so I don't think the increase in reports is due to increased observer effort. Rather, I think (with no real evidence!) that more birds are moving through our area in spring and to a lesser extent in autumn. This year is the standout, as I have reviewed a record of the species pretty much every day for several weeks. Most records are from the northern parts of Canberra but one was reported to the COG Blitz last Saturday from Tidbinbilla.

our regular Tuesday weeding session at the Dickson Wetland was enlivened yesterday morning, c. 8:30 hrs, by the unmissable ‘quork quork’ of a Channel-billed Cuckoo high overhead, flying more or less SSW. Excellent views, and a ’new species’ for many of our participants.

A magnificent sight and sound.
