Podcast:The Future of The Forgotten River
with Dr. Maxine Cooper and Andy Lowes

Hello friends,

You have heard us share the story of The Forgotten River in our own backyard before. In 2019, the Upper Murrumbidgee River at Tharwa ran dry. Under a burning, smoky sky, flow stopped entirely, and the riverbed was visible except for a few algae-choked pools.

You may have even participated in our Community Survey, receiving over 1000 responses that are now directly influencing the future management of the Upper Murrumbidgee.

Fast forward to today, and we have achieved some big wins for our 'Forgotten River' - including a $50 million dollar funding agreement, reached between ACT Independent Senator David Pocock and the Albanese Government, to support and restore the Upper Murrumbidgee!

Now, what's in store for the future of our Forgotten River?

In this timely and important podcast episode, ARRC Director Dr Siwan Lovett sits down with Andy Lowes and Dr Maxine Cooper, both members of the ACT and Region Catchment Management Coordinating Committee, to discuss what has changed since parts of the river dried up in 2019; what the funding agreement realistically means for the river; how that money could be spent; and what can happen when small group of dedicated, passionate people come together.

We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise their continuing connection with, and knowledge about, land, waters and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures; and to Elders past, present and emerging. We value their deep, rich knowledge, insights and ongoing connection to the rivers, creeks, wetlands and billabongs we love and care about.
