Lost duckling

A grandson rescued this duckling from under his car whilst washing the car. No sight nor sound of parents or siblings anywhere in the vicinity, no significant water bodies nearby, and no hollows or other signs of a wood duck nest in any of the nearby trees. Maybe it fell out of a nest somewhere ... or maybe got separated and abandoned by its family.

He's looking after it temporarily pending being able to take it to an animal shelter - there's a neighbourhood cat that prowls the area and would make short work of it if left outside in the hope of reuniting with family.

It seeks out the warmth of being cradled in a hand and will happily go to sleep there. It seems quite healthy, has drunk a little water and nibbled at a bit of lettuce.

Questions:

(1) Is it a pacific black or a wood duck?

(2) Any tips on caring until it can be rehomed?
