I have quickly read the article in the latest CBN about Coots, but will read it again,in more detail, and also respond in more detail. However I am reacting now regarding the absence of Coots in the recent La Nina event.  Coots vanished almost completely from Mallacoota and the rest of East Gippsland during the La Nina event and have now returned in very large numbers.  This has been recorded (to the extent that an absence can be recorded) in both eBird and Birdlife surveys of the Gippsland Lakes.

Equally remarkable - at Mallacoota at least - has been the different locations where Coots have appeared since returning.  Their only usual habitat (in significant numbers) was the 'fresh' water of the Waste Water Treatment Plant.  However since returning they have been common in the tidal (and thus brackish if not salty) parts of the Inlet - especially Bottom Lake - and the estuary of the Betka River.
