I suggest it means: A pair of Spotted Pardalotes were investigating a small tree hollow in our backyard this morning.

Hard to imagine how (just) this, can mean anything about the status of winter.

A pair of Spotted Pardalotes were investigating a small tree hollow in our backyard this morning. They don't normally begin to do this until July. Does this mean it's going to be a very mild winter?
