COG chatline

As some may be aware, a Development Application was submitted in 2021 for construction of a crematorium on the old zoo site at Mugga Land, adjacent to Callum Brae Nature Reserve. This was followed by an amended Development Application earlier this year.

COG made a submission in regard to the original Development Application, covering potential indirect impacts of the development on bird values of the Nature Reserve, as well as potential loss of mature eucalypts and other habitat features on the development site, in the context that much (but not all) of the vegetation on the development site has been highly modified by the series of previous owners. The COG submission can be found on the Conservation page of the COG website

canberrabirds.org.au/conservation/cog-conservation-strategy/

with the direct link to the submission being

canberrabirds.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/DA-202138789-99-Mugga-Lane-Symonston-COG-submission.pdf.

The subsequently amended Development Application, including the developer's response both to public submissions and to the detailed ACT Government submissions, is currently available at planning.act.gov.au/development_applications/pubnote (search for Symonston).

A petition in regard to this potential development has now been started, and is available at

https://epetitions.act.gov.au/CurrentEPetition.aspx?PetId=224&lIndex=-1.

Individual COG members and chatline subscribers will of course have their own views on the various elements of this petition, some of which does not appear to be factually correct, although the overall intent is clear.
