We are looking for volunteers to undertake a Latham’s Snipe survey at a wetland along the Southern end of Old Boboyan Road in Namadgi National Park this Saturday 20^th November (the date of the National Snipe surveys). The attached maps show the location – it is approximately 1.5 hours from Canberra City (access is off Boboyan Rd just north of Brayshaws Hut). As it is in a remote location with no phone service, we do not advise people undertake the survey alone, so depending on the response, we will try to get a small team together.

 

The survey will require walking in and around the wetlands in a systematic way to flush the Snipe and counting them. Waders will be required to access as much of the wetland area as possible and walking will be difficult.

 

Specific instructions and the exact location will be provided to interested volunteers.

 

The reason for this survey is because it is the location of a Latham’s Snipe that has been tracked via satellite from Japan and we are interested in getting a sense of numbers. It has remained in this area for approximately one month.
