Yesterday my wife and I ventured out to Bungendore to buy our snags from
the local butcher. As usual I checked the dams at Trucking Yard Lane and
there were 14 Plumed Whistle-ducks on the bank plus a small assortment
of Grey Teal, Pacific Black Duck and Maned Ducks. There were two
Australian Shelducks on the dam and a further 12 or so feeding near the
cattle feed bins. There may have been more but the grass is so high it
could easily hide lots of birds. I have never seen the area this covered
in such dense and luxurious grass, so much so that it was almost
impossible to to see several cows lying down, it was that tall.
We dropped in to check the depression on Lake Road on the way home.
Again, I have never seen this depression so full of water, nor the size
that it has become. There was not a great deal of bird life present but
there were a few Hardhead, several Hoary-headed Grebes, possibly with
one nest on the far side of the "smaller section of the depression, but
quite a few Eurasian Coots, at least 5 of which were on nests.
Unfortunately there was one coot hung up on the barbed wire fence,
obviously somewhat deceased!!
Driving down Lake Road you could see Lake George in the distance and it
seemed to be at least half full. I will have a look later this week from
the lookout on the Federal Highway.
