Agree with Philip, it is a classic White-faced Heron. Even the flight pose is fairly diagnostic. It is certainly NOT an Australasian Darter.

There isn’t any option other than White-faced Heron. They are a regular there. Long legs immediately eliminate darter from contention, as well as overall shape. It isn’t white, so not an egret. Not a White-necked Heron, as it doesn’t have that feature nor the white wrists (carpal joint). The two tone grey wings are diagnostic. It is grey, not brown which rules out night heron.

Thank you all for your responses. The majority say White-faced Heron.

I saw a couple of White-faced Herons on that trip, but this bird didn't look like one. I thought it may be a Darter or a White-necked Heron or even an Egret, but I will settle for a White-faced Heron.

The brain and eyes can play tricks on you sometimes.

Thanks again and regards

Stan
