Spring Woodland Survey 2021 - Tuggeranong Hill

I surveyed Tuggeranong Hill on Friday 24 September.  It was a very quick whip around to comply with Covid-19 lockdown time restrictions.  There is nothing spectacular to report. Three sites had one Yellow-faced Honeyeater each and small numbers were observed elsewhere on the Hill.  One site had 10 species and two others had seven each.  Breeding observations were Australian Magpies feeding young, Weebills carrying food, Rainbow Lorikeets and Galahs by hollows and an Australian Raven sitting on a nest high in a tree, which was swaying wildly in the wind, which had sprung up by the end of the morning.  In site 2, the large eucalypt has lost many large limbs over the years.  The Galahs have remained faithful, although I doubt that they have successfully raised any chicks for years.  Now bees have taken over one of the remaining hollows and who knows how suitable the other spouts are.  It’s tough being an obligate hollow breeder! In all, 20 species were recorded during the survey periods, with a further 9 species seen or heard elsewhere on the Hill, which is less than the average for spring.
