So true Con and I believe the birds don’t even read the field guides either. I liked the photo recently circulating of a pbq flying offshore.

FWIW, I have recorded Stubble Quail (and PBQ) near the summit of Black Mountain - in woodland with a rather sparse understorey. I believe that Stubble Quail may be a bit more elastic as to habitat than is generally supposed.
kind regards

Stubble quail very unlikely up mt Tennent unless it is now fields of grass. Most likely pbq. They fly as far as they want and there are many recent records around Canberra and namadgi.

Today I walked from the Namadgi Visitors Centre to the summit of Mt Tennent. It wasn't really a bird-watching walk, it was mainly for the purpose of sweating.
I did see the Jacky Winter at NVC (there used to a regular JW in that area so hopefully the sp can become a fixture in the woodland again). I also heard a Fan-tailed Cuckoo or two near the summit of Tennent.
However the most unexpected sighting was a pair of Stubble Quail flushed from by the track about 1 km up the Mt Tennent track. They were in an open area caused by the fires of early 2020. They were identified by being large (for a quail), greyish and streaky,
and by flying a long way rocking from side to side in flight (buttonquails fly a short distance and drop, Brown Quails fly a long way but don't rock in flight).
