Hi all
Each year I lead two COG outings specifically for those new to birding. This
year, the demand for places on the outings has been overwhelming, to the point
where each of the two scheduled outings was repeated a week later to cope with
the demand. Last Saturday’s outing was booked out almost a month in advance. We
may consider a third scheduled beginners outing for future field trip programs.
Yesterday’s outing, number four, at the ANBG was excellent with wonderful
conditions. A keen group of newbies saw some great stuff including:
- close views of a male Rose Robin.
- very close views of a Grey Shrike-thrush on a path, it came as close as about
five metres, and called a lot.
- a pair of Spotted Pardalotes entering a reasonably low hollow.
Thank you to our new birders and new members for attending these outings. It is
heartening to know so many people are keen to learn. Yesterday’s group included
a seven-year-old!
My heartfelt thanks to Sue Lashko for assisting with the outings, acting as the
tail of the group, fitting out some participants with loan binoculars and field
guides, and sharing her extensive experience.
Anthony
