In Sandra's article in the latest CBN she refers to Silver Gulls not liking the long grass in a site they had previously used.
When we lived in New York I spoke with the former Head Ranger for Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge who had been closely involved with strategies to keep 10,000 pairs of Ring-billed
Gulls from nesting beside the runways of the adjacent Kennedy Airport. Jet engines and gulls don't mix well. After many ideas, including use of falconry, failed they changed the height on the mowers to leave the grass a little longer but still minimise the
risk of grass fires. The gulls promptly left. The rationale was that the gulls need to be able to see approaching predators (eg foxes) and the longer grass prevented that.
